31 Day Nail Challenge – Day 29

And we are winding down so quickly!  Let me be completely honest with you – I have really enjoyed this challenge,  but I am soooooo ready to enjoy the design on my nails for more than a few hours.

Like today’s INSPIRED BY THE SUPERNATURAL nails. I’ve actually managed to get 2 days wear out of these, cause I did them early … sneaky aye!

My favourite verse from the Bible is from Psalm 91:11 –  “He shall give His angels charge of you to keep you in all your ways.” It was with this verse in mind that I created today’s look, with the help of this tutorial, for the wings. This nail artist is amazing, by the way, and it makes me feel a little inferior looking back at the video now and what is on my nails.

image

I used 2 coats of Cairuo 16 and then one coat of Jordana Lemon Tropic, which is a sheer shimmery blue. Using a paint brush and Miki #17 I made the shape of the wings. The inside feathers of the wings were done in Jordana White. The nails with the wings got a fine coat of Jordana Silver Glitter, and some small individual glitters on the tips of each wing.

All the other nails got a glitter gradient with Jordana Silver Glitter, and Jordana Silver Jewel ( I think… it was left on the table and I think le kitty stole it :-/).

I’m actually stoaked with how these came out, and I’m totally going to try this again sometime once I have proper brushes …. my crappy little $2 shop ones are just not cutting it anymore!

31 Day Nail Challenge – Day 24

Today’s theme is INSPIRED BY A BOOK. I really struggled with this one, not because I don’t read but because I read copiously. I had an idea of what I wanted to do, but couldn’t execute it in a way that did my favourite series of all time, Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, justice.

I went to another book I really enjoy…

image

The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor is a book I bought a few years ago while I was looking for books to share with potential classes. It has however become one of those books I go to again and again when I have nothing new to read. It follows the ‘real’ story of Alice in Wonderland – Alice is actually Alyss, the Cheshire Cat is a lean mean killing machine. I highly recommend it!

I chose not to replicate the cover, but to incorporate some of the main colours from the sleeve here. Starting with one coat of Cairuo #14(I’ve used so many of these since I started this polish, but they are genuinely amazing for $2!) I then randomly sponged on a light blue – QY #27, an orange – Cairuo #24, and a gold glitter – Miki #19.

I really like how these turned out, and it was nice to do something a little less complicated than the last few days!

31 Day Nail Challenge – Day 21

Here it is, the first of the “inspired by” series, and perhaps the most vague – INSPIRED BY A COLOUR. While researching this day I saw that many bloggers struggled with a clear definition of this one, and I’m with them.

I decided to go with a colour that I love and whose name instantly inspired an idea which coincidentally incorporated the colour. Win!

The colour I chose is Kleancolor Titanic, a deep red with subtle darker undertones. The moment I saw it it reminded me of Rose’s “jump” dress from the film.

Together with my sparkly black/holo striper (The Artist – Jordana Pop art) a plain black striper (Black Mark, also Jordana) a single black rhinestone and a sharpie I pulled together this look, which I was over all fairly happy with:

image

The sharpie was a new trial for me, to see if I could get the filigree work small enough… with a bit more practice I reckon I can!

These nails however, really didn’t want to be photographed.  I tried outside, flash,  lightbox, and even in the bathroom… none of these pictures really capture what I tried to do with this goooooooorgeous colour.  Ah well, this is life.

31 Day Nail Challenge – Day 19 + tutorial (galaxy nails)

I love the stars. I love the awe inspiring beauty of the vastness of space and the unfathomable expanse of it. Space speaks to me of the unknown, possibilities and my own childhood conclusion that the universe we live in did not happen by chance.

I’ve wanted to do this design for a long time. I tried it once before I started blogging, but I hated the way it turned out. Today I’m still not entirely happy, but how can you truly capture such breathtaking beauty on such a small canvas?

image

image

image

There are a lot of tutorials out there for how to achieve this look, but I wanted to add mine to the collection.

You’ll need teeny bits of sponge and tweezers – I found this much easier to use than a whole sponge between my fingers.

image

And some polishes that reflect the type of nebula/galaxy you want to create. I used Kleancolor Black and Black Out (I genuinely adore this black glitter polish!), Sally Hansen Thinking of Blue, Jordana Raspberry & White, and a sticky as QY glitter polish.

image

I started off with just one coat of black, then did a slick of Black Out.

image

image

I could have quite happily ended here, but I didn’t. Taking my blue polish, I sponged on random spaces. You might need to go over a few times to show up.

image

Then my pink/purple over top, but not right out to the edges.

image

Finally I added in the white and went over with the glitter finish.

image

I’m definitely going to try this one again sometime.

31 Day Nail Challenge – Day 17&18/Nostalgic Nail Lacquer Swatch/More Awards!

Hello my lovely readers – I was determined to get this post up for you, despite the fact that my hand is going to feel like it wants to fall off after this. I’m not entirely sure what I did to it, but I’ve been suffering inflammation and pain across the back of my hand and wrist, which has made it really hard to do simple things like wash my hair, or text properly. Believe it or not, this post is mostly being typed up with my left hand. It’s slooooooow. And this is going to be a long post, if you hadn’t worked that out from the number of things in the title >.<

Anyway, there is a reason I wanted to get this up, and its because on Thursday I got my first ever international order, and an Indie brand to boot. Nostalgic Nail Lacquer makes the most delectable shades of polish, that I am sooooo excited to say I now own two bottles of. I was so excited when I got my order (I made Husband drive me to the depot because I initially missed the drop off) that I did a quick paint in the car…

wpid-20130221_170155.jpg

The little honey I want to show you today, is called Possibly Maybe; it is sweetest baby yellow jelly filled with purple, green and silver glitters. My swatches are showing 6 (yes six – this polish applies thin and dries super quick, so it really didn’t bother me to use so many) thin coats with only a base coat. I wanted to show this little beauty in it’s purest unadulterated form.  Can you tell I’m in love?

I died a little inside every time I looked at this gorgeous creature, and I’m definitely glad I endured burning pain in my tendons to apply it. Having said that, I have two days worth of Challenge posts for you, which both use Possibly Maybe a) because I couldn’t bear to take it off, and b) because I couldn’t bear to take it off.

Day 17’s theme was GLITTER – which was easy enough! I just swapped up some fingers by applying Miki #25 underneath, aside from the ring finger.

image

I went out with some friends, and found a chocolate (Vodka and Lime! *drool*) that matched my mani!

image

Day 18 (today’s) is supposed to be HALF MOON … buuuuuuut I couldn’t find my French Manicure stickers, and couldn’t get any ring binger stickers (you know those paper strengtheners we all used before kids started taking their school work in on USB keys and laptops) and so I had to improvise. Using ordinary sellotape I just taped off the bottom half of my nail, and threw on a coat or two of Cairuo #21. It’s no where near straight, or beautiful – just go and put Half Moon Mani into Google Image Search and you’ll see what I mean, but … never mind.

Finally – The gorgeous Nailluxxe nominated me for the Sunshine Award – I’m totally honoured and a little bit in awe of two nominations in just about as many days.

The Sunshine Award is an award given by bloggers to other bloggers. The recipients of the Sunshine Award are: “Bloggers who positively and creatively inspire others in the blogosphere.” The way the award works is this: Thank the person who gave you the award and link back to them. Answer questions about yourself. Select 10 of your favorite bloggers, link their blogs to your post and let them know they have been awarded the Sunshine Award!

sunshine-award

The questions Nailluxxe posed me and my fellow nominees (check them out – I did, and discovered a whole lot of new bloggers to follow!), and my answers are below:

1. How did you come up with the title of your blog?

– -Funny story – Husband and I both came up with it in the car one day. We were brainstorming names for businesses, and I said (jokingly) “if I had a nail polish shop I’d call it beyond nails, or something…” and then he replied “what about beyond the – what is that stuff that you put on first called?”

“Base Coat! Yes! Beyond the Base Coat” … and that was how both name and blog were born, since the name was too good to waste floating around in my brain.

2. Flowers or chocolate (gift)?

– -Flowers any day

3. Relaxed beach holiday or crazy city break get-away?

– -Beach holiday – I love the beach, the sun, and the water.

4. Favourite thing about blogging?

— Being as silly as I want, and the awesome people I keep meeting through it!

5. Beauty product you can’t live without?

— Uhh… I’m not really into beauty products, aside from polish, but I guess it would probably be pressed powder for mah shiiiiiny face.

6. Most embarrassing song on your ipod/in your music collection?

— One Direction – the “that’s what makes you beautiful” one … I swear it’s the only one of theirs I have, and it’s not even their version, it’s Glee’s. Which I suppose is the next most embarrassing playlist I have – 159 Glee songs..

7. One thing you hope to achieve in the future?

— I would love to make a living out of blogging, but since I don’t see that happening any time in the near future, the next thing I hope to achieve is to be a Mummy.

8. Best thing you purchased in the last 3 months?

— uuuuuhhhhm… I haven’t really bought anything in the last three months aside from my Nostalgic order which I am in LOVE with.

9. Describe your blog using ONLY three words

— Budget But Beautiful (that’s not too big headed is it?)

10. Thing/person/memory that puts a smile on your face after a tough day?

— Easy; Husband and Kitty. No arguments there – they never fail to make me smile.

And without further ado, the blogs and bloggers who inspire me, and make my day just that little bit better, and whom I want to nominate for this award are:

  1. Nail Mania
  2. Color Coated
  3. Polish You Pretty
  4. Tips and Top Coats
  5. Lekker Lacquer
  6. Nail Polish Anon
  7. Twenty Six Nails
  8. Intense Polish Therapy
  9. Lani Loves
  10. Leona Carolina

And their questions are…

1. What was your favourite Childhood TV program or movie
2.  What is your current guilty pleasure besides polish/nail art/beauty related products?
3. Are you a summer or winter person?
4. If you had $500 to spend on anything you wanted what would it be?
5. What has been your most frustrating blogging moment
6. Who is your most hated villain character of all time?
7. What is your go to comfort food?
8. What hopes and dreams do you have for your blog?
9. Kitties or puppies?
10. If your life was a movie what genre would it be, who would play you?

Phew! 4 hours later, and this post is finally ready to go. I’ve got something special for you tomorrow, so long as my hand doesn’t decide to pack it in again!

31 Day Nail Challenge – Day 13

Today I get to share with you my absolute favourite manicure of the challenge so far. The theme is ANIMAL PRINT and I knew straight away what I wanted to do for this.

I love leopard/cheetah print on nails – hate it in clothing, but nails and makeup (like CeeCee Fry from X-Factor) I really dig. This type of manicure is all over the blogging community at the moment, especially with the little twist I added to go along with the fact that its the month of luuuuuuurve.

image

image

image

Yummeh! For this I started off with 3 coats of Sally Hansen Without a Stitch on all fingers, and then a coat of Kleancolor Go Bunny on my ring finger. I love the chunky bits in this! Then using the smaller end of my dotting tool I made a few hearts on each nail (excluding ring) with Kleancolor Titanic. I went back with Go Bunny and the very tip of the brush to dab on blotches, making sure there were no big glitter bits. Finally I grabbed a toothpick and made.my ‘c’ and ‘u’ and brackets and filled in any empty spots with Kleancolor Black. … and top coated of course!

I got so many comments on this design. I was a first aid course today and no joke, the first thing the instructor said to me was “Oh wow! Your nails are awesome! ” That made me feel peachy!

The 2nd to last bit of news for you is that I’m in the process of building a light box. My darling Husband started it for me while I was away at my parent’s place on the weekend as a surprise.  We have some tweaking to do, but let me show you the first picture taken in my new toy!

image

We’ll keep experimenting with this baby.

Lastly,  I’m going to be away from civilisation for a few days, and so will have to postpone days 16&17 just a few days. I’ll pick up after Friday’s design on Monday!

Love ya’ll … as of right now this blog has 1600 views…. this excites me!

31 Day Nail Challenge – Day 1

Here you go ladies and gents, the first of my 31 day nail challenge. I wish this post was longer, but we’re about to have a launch party for our new business…. so without further ado, I present to you,  RED…

Will update tomorrow with all the sordid details.

Pinky is covered in fine red glitter I picked up from the $2 shop.

Skittle Mani

Heylo loves. I am so excited. So incredibly excited. In fact, I am so excited that I just about can’t sit still. Which is okay, as long as I don’t bump my nails. Why? Why am I so excited?? Because I’ve just completed my very first skittle manicure, that’s why.

Stephanie at Sincerely Stephanie Nails is running a skittle manicure contest here And when I saw it, I knew I had to enter. Now, I’ve been planning, worrying, obsessing  over this for almost two weeks. I knew I wanted to include my favourite ever nail design, which is the vintage rose, but that was about it – I worked out a colour scheme, and then left it all to percolate.

Today I finally sat down and made a decisive move. I wanted to go for a slightly vintage look to go along with the nails. Here is what I came up with… *deep breath*

image

Eeek! I am so insanely happy with how this came out. I used a whole lot of polish for this too… almost as good as my 2013 nails. I’ll leave a list of polishes below if you want to see what used. Otherwise, I suggest you get your tooshy over to Stephanie’s blog and enter!!

*thumb: Jordana Lavender Fields, Pop Art Stripers in Artsy Purple & Purple Impression, L.A. Colors Art Deco striper in white
*pointer: Cairuo #10, Kleancolor V.I.P
*middle: BC co. Shade 16
*ring: Jordana White, Cairuo #10, Revlon Electric Pink and BC co. Shade 16
*pinky: Sally Hansen CSM Dorian Grey, Jordana White,  Cairuo #10, Jordana Lavender Fields and Pop Art Striper Artsy Purple

Cairuo Polish/NOTD

So yesterday I went for a little shop. I was quite pleased with my haul.

image

The Maybelline was $5 and the Revlon was $8…. I love Postie Plus for parallel imports! I’ll swatch those two later. I also grabbed a few intriguing bottles of $2 polish from my local dollar store. I saw this brand come out there just before Christmas, and my mum got me a really sweet green in my stocking. The brand name of the polish is Cairuo.  It doesn’t make any claims about being 3-free, or anything like that, but I loved the colours I saw, and for $2 it can’t be that bad… right?

The colour I’m showing today is number 29… or #4520 … I’m not sure which number is the right one.

image

image

But wowzers…. this was such a nice polish to apply. When I first opened it, it had a weird smell – as it dried however… oh my life. It smells like strawberries and bubblegum. Delish. I think because of that and the colour I might call this strawberry-gum.

It has a quick drying time, comparable to Jordana polishes, and a smooth finish. This is two thin coats.

I topped my ring finger with Kleancolor Fuchsia Glitter for an accent, which I think fits quite nicely.

I have two more polishes from this brand to swatch, so keep an eye out… and perhaps I might even expand my collection a teeeeeeny bit more?

Happy New Year!

I know, I know… it’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything. I’ve been having serious issues with uploading.

Here today though, I’ve got a wee pic of the nails I’ve done to celebrate 2013. I’ve used a 13 different polishes, and I’m doing this on the run, so I’ll update this soon with names.
